Hello everyone! I’m sorry I haven’t updated you all sooner. I’ve been doing a lot of sleeping.
The surgery went very well. The surgeons were able to complete the mastectomy as well as the reconstruction. Results from pathology will take about a week to come back. The plastic surgeon decided not to perform the reduction on the non-cancerous side to allow the reconstructed breast to heal and settle. She was able to get very good blood flow and everything is looking great. I left the OR with four drains (two in the breast and one on each hip). Currently, only the hip drains remain. They are one of the most uncomfortable parts of the surgery.
Looking in the mirror is my only struggle at this point. The shape of my chest and the way I’m hunched over right now will take some getting used to. But it’s all temporary, my battle armor. So I’ll wear it proudly right along with my smile.
Overall, the pain is not bad. It’s more discomfort and soreness that I’m feeling. I’m making sure to walk and increase my protein intake as instructed. Sleeping is tricky at night but I’m so tired by 9pm that it doesn’t seem to matter!
Thank you to everyone who’s been checking in and sending good thoughts my way!
